This episode consists of four different stories.
  4. 4Land of Adults -Natural Right-May 6, 2003 · 24mKino was not always a traveler, nor were they always named Kino. As a child, they grew up in the Land of Adults, a place where adulthood and responsibility is attained by the means a single operation carried out on every child's twelfth birthday. 5. 5Three Men Along the Rails -On the Rails-May 13, 2003 · 24m · ★ 7.0As they make their way along an old railroad, Kino runs into a man who has been polishing the tracks for some fifty years. Stopping for a break, Kino entertains the man with a story of a land where the people no longer have to work, but choose to subject themselves to meaningless and stressful tasks anyway. It may seem foolish to the old man, but little does he realise that his own work is just as pointless, for, as Kino is about to discover, there are two more men working on the railroad, each undoing the work done by the others.
  6. 6Coliseum (1) -Avengers-May 20, 2003 · 24m · ★ 8.0When Kino stops off in a country reputed to be a beautiful and wondrous place, they find that the reality is far different from their expectations. Thanks to the laws laid down by the land's cruel and hedonistic king, all visitors must participate in battle tournaments or be subjected to lives of slavery as second-class citizens. Forced to abide by this custom, Kino takes gun in hand and enters the coliseum, but how will they fare in the life-or-death battles against a variety of opponents who are each driven to fight by their own, unique motives?

i found kino's journey late at night looking for an anime to start on my friend's jellyfin server. four episodes later, mind completely blown, new favorite media thing ever. it's my new hyperfixation and no one can take it from me. kino's journey is a short yet thought provoking anime. what takes some getting used to is understanding that the protagonist is not a hero, they're a neutral force not trying to get too involved. the first couple episodes introduce their philosophy very well in a way the reboot never really touches on. but it got me to rethink the entire ideal of heroism in the first place. every episode is a new land, a new story, a new dilemma. the pacing is quiet and slow, in a somber yet peaceful way. it feels very down to earth. the formula is similar to star trek, but less space policey, less focus on solving the issue, more just posing philosophical questions, and occasionally letting kino be a total badass with their persuader. also good androgynous/agender representation in anime, if that's your thing. it's more spelled out in the first ova "in order to do something - life goes on."
